BUENA HIGH SCHOOL TEXTBOOK POLICIES
Students are responsible for the school textbooks checked out to them:
ALL TEXTBOOKS ARE TO BE RETURNED TO THE LIBRARY ON OR BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF CLASS
Our textbook policy is consistent with the California Education Code and the Ventura Unified Board of Education Policies:
Students are expected to:
Teachers are not responsible for:
- Write your book copy & barcode numbers in your agenda or notebook immediately after you check them out.
- Be sure you always have your own book. If you turn in another student’s book, you will still be responsible for the book number that was checked out to you.
- PLEASE NOTE: Students can log in to the Buena High School Catalog http://library.venturausd.org with their student ID number & computer password to see their own account and view a list of all books checked out to them.
- Students are issued ONE textbook that can be used in class and at home. We do not have enough textbooks to issue a double set of books to every student. STUDENTS SHOULD NOT LEAVE THEIR TEXTBOOKS IN TEACHERS' CLASSROOMS. We cannot check out additional textbooks to students who forget to bring their books to class. There are textbooks available for students to use while in the library.
ALL TEXTBOOKS ARE TO BE RETURNED TO THE LIBRARY ON OR BEFORE THE LAST DAY OF CLASS
- It is the students’ responsibility to return their own books to the library and make sure they have been checked in. Turning in another student’s book does not clear your library account; you must return the book you checked out.
- At the end of the semester, students with textbooks that have been lost, unreturned, or damaged beyond repair will be placed on the obligation list and charged for replacement books.
- Obligations stay on each student’s record until the items are returned, the fine is paid, or identical replacement books are provided.
Our textbook policy is consistent with the California Education Code and the Ventura Unified Board of Education Policies:
- “If the property has been willfully cut, defaced or otherwise damaged, or if the student refuses to return it at the request of a district employee, the district shall afford the student his/her due process rights and subsequently may withhold the student's grades, diploma and transcripts until the student or parent/guardian has paid all damages. As provided by law, the parent/guardian of a minor shall be liable for all damages caused by the minor's misconduct." (Education Code 48904/ Ventura Unified School Board Policy 6161.2.)
Students are expected to:
- Be responsible for the school property loaned to them.
- Refrain from writing, highlighting, or drawing in school textbooks.
- Keep your books in your possession. Do not leave your book in a classroom, on a table, or in a friend’s locker.
- Never loan your book to anyone – not even your best friend!
- Make sure you can see your books or backpack at all times.
- Keep a book cover on your book. Free book covers are available in the library; students may also use a paper grocery bag to make a cover. (Suggestion: write your name in large letters on the paper book cover.)
- Keep your book away from all liquids (e.g. rain, spilled drinks, and leaky water bottles). Wet books that develop mold are considered "damaged beyond repair" and cannot be used; as a result, students will receive an obligation for the full cost of the book.
- Keep books in a safe place at home, out of the reach of pets and small children.
- Return textbooks in good condition, on (or before) the last day of class.
- Return books to the school library as soon as possible when you know you will be dropping a class, or moving.
Teachers are not responsible for:
- Storing individual students’ books in the classroom.
- Collecting or returning students’ books to the library.
- Any textbook checked out to a student that was lost or stolen because it was left in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to send any stray textbooks to the library where the student can come and retrieve them.
